Portrait of Salvador Atma

“We do not treat conditions. We examine assumptions — and a surprising number of things that present as conditions turn out, on examination, to rest on one.”

Salvador Atma has spent more than twenty years working with contemplative methods concerned with a single question: how attention constructs the experience of being a self, and what becomes available when that construction becomes visible.

He is the author of the Institute's method of deconstructive mental analysis — a precise, repeatable procedure for examining the assumptions that organise experience. The method is not a philosophy and requires no belief. It is a way of looking, taught as a way of looking.

Position

Outside any single tradition.

The closest relatives of the methods he teaches are the non-dual contemplative lineages — Dzogchen, Advaita Vedanta, Kashmir Shaivism — traditions that shared an unusual emphasis on direct investigation of awareness rather than on belief or ritual.

He is not a lineage holder and does not present himself as one. He holds no ecclesiastical office, confers no transmission, and asks for no allegiance. What he teaches is a procedure, and a procedure can be examined, argued with and tested by the person using it.

He continues to teach in an explicitly contemplative context through Atma Retreats Ltd, a separate company registered in the United Kingdom. That work uses the vocabulary of those traditions, because in that setting the vocabulary is accurate. The two companies are distinct: separate operations, separate contracts, separate records.

Why the Institute exists

The people arriving were not looking for a spiritual context at all.

They were founders, investors, physicians and executives who had noticed something specific and unwelcome: that the quality of their attention had become the limiting factor in their judgment, and that nothing in their professional formation had ever addressed it.

They did not want a philosophy. They wanted the thing itself, without the surrounding culture — and they were, by profession, unwilling to accept anything they could not interrogate.

Atma Clarity exists for that audience. Same core method, secular language, and claims restricted to what published research can actually support. Where the evidence is thin, we say so rather than decorate it.

On the origin of the method

“These methods did not come out of a laboratory. They came from people who spent centuries doing one thing with unusual rigour: investigating how attention constructs experience. Cognitive science has since operationalised much of what they described. Presenting old methods as new discoveries is both dishonest and trivially disproved, so we don't.”

On what the work is for

“I am not interested in whether people find this profound. I am interested in whether they can see what they are doing at the moment they are doing it. That is the whole of it.”
